10 Movies Every Data Scientist Must Watch

Movies are more than just blockbusters with explosions and superheroes; the central idea of the film is what affects people and instils a concept in their minds.

I have been a movie buff all my life, I have watched almost all the top movies from IMDB and every decent movie from my favourite genres especially science fiction.

If you will notice, movies are not just a source of entertainment and amusement; they play a critical role in forming our worldview consciousness. In a nutshell, movies educate and propagate ideas in the same manner that a paperback book does today.

Now, you may ask me how data science and movies are related. Well, they are! There are many amazing movies that showed the use of data science very well, that we might see in the coming future in real life and some are already existing.

Oh, by the way, do you know Data science is used within the film industry? You must be thinking how Well, Data science is used in a number of ways such as development of films, generating more revenue, improving post- production preventing movie failures, and real-time streaming.

There are a few films on science and technology that are worth your time, such as biographies, true stories, science fiction, and whatnot.

Today I'd like to discuss ten films that every data scientist should see. Just Enjoy!

1. Interstellar (2014)

Interstellar is a science fiction film released in 2014. The story is set in a dystopian future in which humanity is fighting for survival. The film follows a crew of astronauts on their search for a new home for humanity through a wormhole near Saturn.

2. Beautiful Mind (2001)

A Beautiful Mind is a biographical drama film based on the life of American mathematician John Nash, released in 2001. Nash is a graduate student at Princeton University when the story begins. Nash develops paranoid schizophrenia early in the film and has delusional episodes while observing the toll his illness takes on his wife Alicia and friends. The film depicts how a smart but asocial mathematician's life takes a turn for the worst after accepting an assignment from William Parcher. It also highlights his accomplishments despite his mental disorders.

3. Imitation Game (2014)

The Imitation Game, directed by Morten Tyldum and written by Graham Moore, is a 2014 American historical drama film based on Andrew Hodges' 1983 biography Alan Turing: The Enigma.

The title of the film is a reference to the game devised by cryptanalyst Alan Turing in his seminal article "Computing Machinery and Intelligence" in 1950 to answer the issue "Can machines think?"

During World War II, Turing deciphered German intelligence signals for the British government.

4. The Terminator (1984)

James Cameron directed the science fiction picture The Terminator in 1984.

In a post-apocalyptic future, a cyborg assassin is sent back in time from 2029 to 1984 to kill Sarah Connor, whose son would one day save humanity from annihilation by a hostile artificial intelligence.

5. Moneyball (2011)

Bennett Miller directed Moneyball, a 2011 biographical sports drama film. Michael Lewis' nonfiction book of the same name was published in 2003, and the film is based on it.

Faced with the franchise's restricted player budget, Beane and assistant general manager Peter Brand use a sophisticated sabermetric technique to scout and analyse players to assemble a team of underrated quality in the film.

6. Minority Report (2002)

The minority report, a 2002 film, depicts a futuristic technology that allows criminals to be caught even before they commit a crime. When John Anderton is accused of one of these crimes, he sets out to prove his innocence. Steven Spielberg directed the film Minority Report, which is set in the year 2054.

7. Blade Runner (2017)

The plot of Blade Runner centres around bioengineered individuals known as replicants. We are in the modern era, and artificial intelligence is being used to digitise and automate more parts of life. Films like Blade Runner help us better comprehend how these technologies are portrayed. These republicans are pursued by the LAPD blade runner, and decisions are made in the film based on emotions and the freedom to live.

8. Space Odyssey (1968)

Stanley Kubrick created and directed the 1968 epic science fiction picture A Space Odyssey. Clarke's 1951 short story "The Sentinel" and other Clarke short stories served as inspiration for the picture. The film addresses themes of existentialism, human evolution, technology, artificial intelligence, and the potential of extraterrestrial life, and chronicles a voyage to Jupiter with the sentient computer HAL after the discovery of an alien monolith altering human evolution.

9. Her (2013)

Spike Jonze wrote, directed, and produced Her, a 2013 American science-fiction romantic drama film. Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix) is a guy who starts a connection with Samantha (Scarlett Johansson), an artificially intelligent virtual assistant embodied through a female voice. Though they start off as "friends," the relationship quickly grows into love.

10. Ex Machina (2014)

The title is derived from the Latin phrase "deus ex machina," which means "god from a machine." Caleb, a programmer at one of the world's leading internet corporations, is chosen to take part in the century's biggest experiment in the film. What part does he play? To create an artificial intelligence system from the ground up utilizing personal information acquired from social networking sites. This film explores humanity's right to privacy while also demonstrating the capabilities of machine learning and data analysis.

Final Conclusion:

Now, We know that this list is pretty subjective, so please let us know if you think we've missed any movies that should be included in the comments section below.

Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, and other similar technologies are continually evolving. It is critical to upskill to remain relevant in today's modern industry.
